Top 5 Alicante destinations for families on a budget

It's amazing – and a little bit scary – the way in which money can be so quickly spent on holiday, even more so when the kids come along.

Happily, many of Alicante's best attributes can be enjoyed for very little cost – or for nothing at all. At Holiday Extras, we do our bit to make your vacation as stress-free as possible with our low-cost airport transfers.

Once you've unpacked, you'll no doubt have some excursions in mind – ones that will keep the young ones fully engaged. We present, in no particular order, five of the best Alicante destinations for families on a budget…

Santa Bárbara Castle

Many must-see parts of the province are in Alicante itself, such as the imposing Santa Bárbara Castle, which is accessible on foot – or by lift for a small fee.

The city's very own beach

If you're staying in the city, Playa del Postiguet is pretty much right on your doorstep. It's the perfect place to sunbathe, build sand castles and splash around in the warm Mediterranean Sea – all activities that cost nothing at all.

Cabo de las Huertas

About five miles up the coast from Alicante is Cabo de las Huertas. Here, you'll find one of the province's finest beaches, Playa de San Juan, which is wider and longer than Alicante's city beach (Playa del Postiguet). This beach adjoins Playa Muchavista, forming a long, long stretch of both sand and sea. It's quick and easy getting to Cabo de las Huertas by tram – and a fun and inexpensive way to travel.

Parque El Palmeral

Head on over to Parque El Palmeral, which is abundant with lush foliage, including palm trees, cacti and eye-catching botanical gardens. It also features fun footbridges, waterfalls, play areas and rowing boats. Bus journeys from Alicante to Parque El Palmeral take no time at all and cost very little.

Tabarca

The tiny island of Tabarca is a short boat trip away from the mainland. Its attractions include a fabulous beach, shops, restaurants and even a museum. This islet is also a marine reserve that is replete with bass, eels and seals, squid, octopi and many other sea creatures. To get to Tabarca from Alicante, you will first need to take the bus to Santa Pola, a journey that takes less than an hour. From there, it's just a short boat trip to the island.
