San Juan beach

This is the most famous beach in Alicante, known for high-quality sand and its beachfront bars and restaurants. Pedal boats and games for kids mean little ones have a lot to keep them occupied and there's also educational play and disabled access during the summer months.

Playa de la Albufereta

A smaller offering, La Albufereta is a stretch of golden sand nestled between the Sierra Grossa mountains and El Tossal de Manises – an important archaeological site where the ancient city of Alicante was founded. Popular with locals, it's a more tranquil choice for uninterrupted paddling and tanning.

Tabarca Island

Opposite Alicante, 11 miles off-shore, Tabarca Island is peppered with coves and beaches surrounded by the crystal-clear sea. There are regular boat trips from Alicante and, once you're on dry land, you can enjoy the island's famous fish and rice dish served with green garlic sauce. It's also a historically fascinating place – once a refuge for Berber pirates – and its original walls are an Asset of Cultural Interest.
