Cycling

Two wheels are often better than four, and never has this rung truer than in Alicante. The area is a cyclist's dream, with flat routes for novices or mountain biking circuits for experts. The coastal road from Altea to Benidorm is fairly non-hilly and has views to reward you when you stop for breaks. For a challenge, the 21km climb to the mountain town of Guadalest takes you through small towns and beautiful countryside along the way.

Watersports

You can stay closer to Alicante if you're up for a watersports adventure holiday. Most of the area's beaches offer activities from laid-back snorkelling to parasailing. Club Surf El Moreno gives lessons in surfing, stand-up paddling, skimboarding and longskating, while Aquaventura Buceo teaches you how to scuba dive. You can also hire jet skis at lots of locations throughout Alicante or charter a boat to take you to Tabarca Island where you can swim in the deep blue ocean.

Mountaineering

To get out and about in the fresh air – and give your quads a good workout – there are lots of mountains around. Hike the Sierra de Serrella which is dotted with geological rock formations known as Els Frares (the friars). It has three peaks surrounded by olive groves and boasting spectacular views – sometimes you can see Ibiza in the distance. Midway between Dénia and Javea you'll find Montgó Natural Park, with a mix of easy and tough climbs. You might be lucky enough to see eagles, owls and badgers as well as tiny caves historically used for meditation.

You might be on too much of an adrenaline rush to want to worry about how to get to and from the airport. That's where we come in, with Alicante Airport transfers from locations all throughout Spain.
