Road closure at Manchester airport
The main road to Terminals 1 and 3 at Manchester airport is being closed from 15 February until 3 March because of improvements to Manchester airport station.
As part of work to create a new platform at the station, Network Rail will be sliding a new bridge into position under one of the main access roads to Manchester airport, Outwood Lane.
During the closure of Outwood Lane, Terminal 1 traffic will be diverted via Terminal 2 past the station. Terminal 3 traffic will be directed up Ringway Road West and onto Ringway Road past Premier Park and the Airport Hotel.
"It is impossible to predict how much longer road users should allow but we don't expect major disruption. However, the morning and evening peak periods are always busy so we are advising people to leave a little extra time for the trip" says Manchester airport capacity planning manager, Bob Longworth.
Once completed the work should mean major improvements for anyone travelling to the airport by train. Manchester airport station will be able to handle more trains, and reliability and punctuality should also be improved and rail congestion eased around Manchester Piccadilly station.
Manchester airport station is becoming increasingly busy as more people discover the benefits of travelling to the airport by train. "At the moment there are only two platforms at the airport and with over 300 trains a day calling there, we often have to have a couple of trains in the same platform at any one time," says Network Rail area general manager, Gary Openshaw.
Network Rail says that rail passengers should be largely unaffected by the work except for the weekend of 16 and 17 February when trains between Manchester Piccadilly and Manchester airport station will be replaced by coaches.
