A tranquil retreat
This stately, elegant old building, whose eight acres of pleasant grounds and wildflower meadows back onto the beautiful Golden Acre Park, would be an attractive and welcoming place even if there weren't a soul here. But add to that the bubbly, entertaining team, who treat you like an old friend from the moment you arrive, and you've a recipe for a hugely relaxing and enjoyable stay.
Peace and quiet
Despite its proximity to the airport, which is just ten to fifteen minutes away, and its main road location, there was something about the Mercure that just made us feel completely removed from everything. It's a very quiet Leeds Bradford airport hotel, and fairly small at 118 rooms, but more than that, there's a peaceful atmosphere pervading the place that made us feel wonderfully calm. The hotel is surrounded by countryside, cows from a nearby farm graze just the other side of the main road, and there are hedgehog houses, bird boxes and beehives, from which the hotel will soon be harvesting its own honey, in the grounds. Our room looked out onto the lawn and the delightful park beyond, where you must go for a wander, it houses landscaped gardens, an arboretum, a huge lake that's home to several species of wildfowl, three national plant collections and much more.
Fun and frolics
There's plenty to do at the Mercure: a leisure club with a 1.35-metre-deep pool, a whirlpool, saunas, a steam room and a gym offering free fitness classes, as well as a beauty salon, a nail bar and a hairdresser's. In the evening, there's a restaurant and a lively bar. But you may not want to leave your cosy room. Most of the non-ground-floor rooms have balconies, and almost all the ground-floor ones have patio doors, so everyone's got their own little bit of outdoor space where you can relax and enjoy the Yorkshire sunshine.
At the Mercure we genuinely did feel right at home - almost among friends. Manager Stewart Woodeson told us he never wanted the place to feel stuffy - we don't think he ever needs to worry on that point.
We recommend the Mercure Leeds Parkway for:
Great staff - The evident camaraderie between the staff seems to extend to everyone they deal with.
Rural charm - You could lose yourself in the ground for hours. It would be hard to beat this setting.
Comfort - We loved our comfortable room, with its balcony and view of the grounds, and We felt totally at home in our cosy room with its balcony view of the grounds
The hotel itself was fine, if dated - but the airport taxi they booked for us did not arrive, and they were hopeless at sorting it, we needed up having to book our own (as well as another couple of guests) and were half an hour late to the airport. I would never stay here again on that basis. The taxi driver we eventually got explained they have serious staffing issues and there was never any guarantee of someone being on duty at 6am and the hotel should have known that. Not good.
