How to get around Tenerife

Tenerife covers more than 1,260 square miles, roughly equivalent to the size of an average Irish county. That might not sound especially big but this, the largest of the Canary Islands manages to pack a lot in. Hire a car

Almost every part of Tenerife is accessible by road, which is good news if you intend to take advantage of one of the island's many car hire firms. Don't forget to drive on the right-hand side of the road!

Tenerife on two wheels

If you like travelling everywhere by motorbike, Tenerife will open up to you even more, thanks to dirt tracks and back roads that cars can't easily navigate. Even if you don't own a bike, you can still rent one on the island. If you're feeling particularly energetic, why not get around on a bicycle? Tenerife features several cycle-hire outlets – and if you feel up to the task, you might like to try tackling Spain's highest peak, the volcanic Mount Teide.

"Taxi!"

Sometimes, a taxi is the easiest and quickest way to get to where you want to go. Tenerife is home to a number of taxi firms, the majority of which are located on the southwest coast. Prices are quite reasonable and the more people you travel with, the cheaper the fare works out.

Go gaga for Guaguas (or travel by tram)

'Guagua' is the Spanish word for 'bus' – and Tenerife is blessed with excellent public transport services that cover pretty much the whole island. Prices are modest and if you intend to do a lot of travelling in this way, it's worth picking up a season ticket, which can be purchased at any bus station or kiosk. Some season tickets are valid on the island's two tram lines, too, which operate out of Santa Cruz, taking in San Cristóbal de La Laguna, La Cuesta and Tíncer.

Tenerife treks

This prominent Canary Island is the ideal place for a gentle stroll – or more taxing trek. There are numerous trails that take in many of Tenerife's must-see landmarks, including a number that are dedicated to formidable Mount Teide and its environs.
