Getting Around Tenerife on a Budget

While it would be lovely to be chauffeured everywhere on holiday, sometimes the easiest way to save a bit of cash is by reducing transport costs. This is easy to do in Tenerife, thanks to an abundance of public transport routes. Here are some tips for getting around Tenerife on a budget. Don't forget our great value airport transferstoo!

By bus

The cheapest option for travelling in Tenerife is probably to take the bus. A good start is to buy a Bonobus card for either €15 or €20. This can be shared between more than one person, used on every route and saves you about 50% on the price of each ticket. Fares are reasonable to get to neighbouring regions: from Puerto de la Cruz to Santa Cruz it's about €3.30 with a pass (€5 without) and from Teide National Park to Puerto de la Cruz it's €5.90 on a Parador de Turismo.

By taxi

There are a lot of taxi companies serving each distinct area of Tenerife. It's important to bear in mind that you should budget for any taxi trips you take – the meter runs from the very start of the journey, although you can arrange a pre-agreed price if you're going to a specific area of the island on a day trip. Eurotaxis are the company to look for when you need an accessible taxi ride. Their cars are kitted out to be wheelchair friendly.

By tram

Trams in Tenerife follow two lines. Line one goes from Santa Cruz to La Laguna, a 40-minute journey with 21 stops. Line two runs from La Cuesta to Tíncer. You can get tram tickets from Metropolitano de Tenerife (MTSA) offices and from machines at each stop. Pick up a virtual wallet – a card that works on both the trams and buses, which can be topped up with amounts from €5-€100. A single costs €1.35 and there are discounts for students, seniors and large families.

By car

Car hire in Tenerife isn't as budget friendly as public transport, but it definitely gives you the freedom a holiday deserves. Look out for rental companies including AutoReisen who offer online discounts and Autos Plaza which has offices dotted across the island.

An option that won't break your budget is one of our Tenerife airport transfers. You can choose from different options including a private car or a shared shuttle bus to pick you up at the airport and take you to your accommodation.
