Driving in America
After an 8 hour flight across the Atlantic, the chances are you're going to be feeling a bit at sea when you finally touch down on American soil at Orlando Airport. Everything is on a much bigger scale than the UK: cars are larger, roads are wider and there are some different rules to what you may be used to at home. Taking to the road in a left-hand drive rental car in an unfamiliar country can be a daunting experience. We've put together some top tips and useful info with what you need to know about driving your rental car in Florida, Orlando.
- Left hand drive - Most important of all, drive on the right-hand side of the road and overtake on the left.
- Automatic gearbox - Be aware that the majority of car hire vehicles will have an automatic gearbox. If you aren't used to driving an automatic, we advise you to call the car hire provider before you travel and ask to book a manual car instead.
- Minimum car hire age - 18 years old. Under 25's may have to pay a young driver surcharge.
- Seatbelt/safety belts - Florida State law requires all drivers, front seat passengers and all minors under the age of 18 to wear a seatbelt.
- Child restraints - Every driver must ensure that all children under 5 to be properly secured with a US government-approved child restraint or car seat.
- Fuel types - Petrol is known as Gasoline and Diesel remains the same as in the UK.
- Petrol/gas stations - Petrol (Gas) stations many will require you to pay before you fill up, either at the pump or inside the station. Most will accept credit cards, but it's a good idea to carry some cash, so you don't get caught out.
- Mobile phones - Unlike the UK, it is not illegal to make calls using a mobile phone. However, you could be issued with a penalty ticket if you become distracted while doing so. Texting while driving is illegal.
Road safety laws
Speed limits
- Limited Highways - 70mph
- Highways - 55mph
- Business and residential areas - 30mph
- School zones - 20mph
School buses All vehicles must stop at least 10 feet from a school bus that is stopped for loading or unloading children and displays flashing lights, as well as the stop signal arm. This rule does not apply if the bus is stopping on the other side of a divided carriageway.
It is also illegal to drive too slowly and, if caught, you could be issued with a ticket. Make sure you drive with the flow of the traffic and within the speed limit.
Drinking and driving
It is a crime in all US states, including Florida, to drive with more than 0.08milligrams of alcohol in your blood. In Florida you can have your licence revoked and the vehicle you are driving may be impounded. It is also illegal to have any containers of alcohol open in the car.
It is important to note that drinking alcohol and then driving may invalidate your car rental insurance, irrespective of local drink driving laws. Check your policy for full details.
