At night, Amsterdam really comes alive with a wide variety of clubs, live music and the famous red light district.
Outside the capital, there are many other attractions, including the Kreukenhof Gardens, home of the beautiful Dutch tulip fields. Car hire in the Netherlands with Holiday Extras will enable you to explore further afield, as there are so many places within easy driving distance of Amsterdam.

Driving on Holland's roads**
Roads in the Netherlands are excellent and easy to navigate. To make your trip even easier, here are some of the main driving laws:
- Left hand drive vehicles - Drive on the right, overtake on the left.
- Minimum car hire age - 19 years old.
- Seatbelt - It is compulsory for all occupants to wear a seatbelt. The driver is responsible for ensuring all passengers under 18 are wearing a seatbelt.
- Children under 1.35m in height must be placed in an approved child restraint conforming to safety standard ECE 44/03 or later. This applies to both the front and rear of the car.
- Mobile phones - It is illegal to use a mobile phone while driving.
- Toll Roads - There are no motorway tolls in the Netherlands.
- Petrol stations - Petrol, diesel and LPG are all widely available at service stations.
Road safety laws
- Motorways (autoroutes) - 130kph/80mph
- Main highways - 100kph/60mph
- Built up areas - 50kph/30mph
- Regional and local roads - 80kph/50mph
The use of horns in built up areas is prohibited other than in the case of extreme danger. You should flash your headlights at night instead.
Bicycles and mopeds have right of way over cars. Beware of cycle lanes, as mopeds are not meant to use them, but often do.
Trams - you may overtake a stationary tram on the right provided it does not inconvenience any passengers who may be boarding or disembarking. When overtaking moving trams, they should be passed on the right. It is permitted to overtake them on the left only if there is insufficient room to do so on the right.
Although not a legal requirement, it is advisable to carry a warning triangle, as any vehicle which is insufficiently lit when parked at night must be indicated by a red warning triangle. Spare bulbs for your vehicle's external lights, a fire extinguisher and a first aid kit are also recommended.
Drinking and driving
The drink driving limit is 50mg of alcohol per 100ml of blood. This is less than the UK limit of 80mg per 100ml. If you have been driving for less than five years, the limit is 20mg of alcohol per 100ml of blood. Any driver suspected of being under the influence of alcohol will be requested to take a breath test and possibly a blood test as well.
It is important to note that drinking alcohol and then driving may invalidate your car rental insurance, irrespective of local drink driving laws. Check your policy for full details.
If you are stopped by the police for committing a motoring offence, you will be liable for an on the spot fine.
The use of a Satellite Navigation system is not illegal, but make sure you deactivate speed camera locations before use.
Mobile phone use
It is illegal to use a mobile phone while driving or in control of a vehicle in the Netherlands.
Motorways in the Netherlands are toll-free and there are only two roads in the country with tolls: the Western Scheldt Tunnel and Dordtse Kil.
**This information should be considered as a broad overview of things to remember when hiring a car. It is therefore very important that you read the rental terms and conditions and associated policies for your own specific policy as well as doing your own research into the motoring laws of the country in which you will be driving.Top
