Driving on France's roads**

Ask anyone who has driven in France and they will tell you that the country's roads are some of the best in Europe to drive on. To help make your road trip even easier, we've put together some useful information on what you need to know before you hit the road:

• Left hand drive vehicles - Drive on the right, overtake on the left.
• Minimum car hire age - 18 years old. Under 25's may be liable for a young driver surcharge.
• Seatbelt - The driver and all passengers must wear seatbelts. It is the driver's responsibility to ensure that all passengers under 18 are wearing a seatbelt.
• Travelling with children - Under 10's must not travel in the front of a vehicle without a specialist child restraint or booster seat.
• Mobile phones - It is illegal to use a mobile phone while driving.
• Toll Roads - Cash and credit cars are accepted.
• Petrol stations - Many are open 24/7 and accept all major credit cards.

Speed limits

• Toll motorways (autoroutes) - 130kph/80mph
• Dual carriageways - 110kph/68mph
• Out of town roads - 90kph/56mph
• New speed limits - many A & B roads - To reduce road facilities the speed limits were reduced to 80kph/50mph
• Built up areas - 50kph/31mph

A number of road side cameras in France will not only record your speed, but also whether you are keeping a safe driving distance from the vehicle in front. They will also catch you if you jump a red light or stop signs.

Breakdowns

It is a legal requirement to carry both a reflective triangle in case of break down, as well as a high-vis jacket or vest in the vehicle (NOT in the boot) at all times. It is recommended that you check your hire car for these before you leave .

This is also required for cars hired in other countries that are driven over the border into France.

Drinking and driving

For people who have been driving for less than 3 years, the alcohol limit is 0.2 grams per litre. For those who have had a driving licence for more than 3 years, the limit is 0.5 grams per litre of blood. These are both lower than the UK limits. Drivers are also required to carry a breathalyser/alcohol test kit. Car hire providers will normally provide these, but it is advisable to check.

Please note that drinking alcohol and then driving may invalidate your car rental insurance, irrespective of local drink driving laws. Check your policy for full details.

Radar detectors/SatNavs

SatNavs showing the location of speed cameras are illegal in France. Those caught can be fined up to €1500 and have the device taken away, even if it is not in use. Radar detectors which are able to locate fixed and mobile speed cameras are also not permitted.

The use of a Satellite Navigation system is not illegal, you should deactivate the speed camera location settings before use.

On-the-spot fines

Fixed and mobile speed cameras have become commonplace throughout France and if caught, the French authorities can and will issue on-the-spot fines of up to €375 euro (£323) which must be paid in cash.

Credit cards and travellers cheques are not accepted, and cash must be in the local currency. If necessary, you will be escorted to the nearest ATM.

Use of mobile phones

It is illegal to use a mobile phone while driving or in control of a vehicle in France, as well as wearing headphones whilst driving. If caught you are liable to a €135/£110 fine.

Petrol/Diesel

Service stations are located in towns and also on the motorways (autoroutes) . However, fuel prices tend to be cheaper in urban areas than in service stations on motorways. Many have a 24-hour self service facility and accept all major credit cards.

Although the price of unleaded fuel (sans plomb) is on a par with those in the UK, diesel (gasoil/gazole/gas-oil) is cheaper per litre in France.

Toll roads/péage

If you are exploring the sights of the area around Toulouse, then you may well take your hire car on French toll roads (autoroute à péage) It is therefore worth having some spare change to hand, although toll booths accept all major credit cards.
