Barbados car rental locations

Driving on Barbados' roads**

Here are few local laws and customs that you may find useful when driving in Barbados. This is a rough guide and should be used in conjunction with the terms and conditions stipulated by your car hire company, as well as your own research about driving laws in Barbados.

  • Right hand drive - drive on the left-hand side of the road, overtake on the right.
  • Seatbelt - Barbadian law requires all car occupants to wear a seatbelt.
  • Children under 5 - Must use the appropriate child seat for the vehicle.
  • Petrol Stations - Petrol Stations can be found liberally throughout Barbados, including in and around Bridgetown, and along the highways of the island. Most petrol stations are open 24 hours a day.
  • Mobile phones - It is illegal to use a mobile phone while driving, unless using an approved handsfree kit.
  • Toll Roads - There are no toll roads in Barbados

Speed limits

  • Major carriageways - 80kph
  • Rural areas - 60kph
  • Built up areas/cities - 40kph

Drinking and driving

There is no blood/alcohol limit in Barbados, however there are heavy penalties for driving without due care and attention, which can vary from a fine to prison time. We recommend you do not drink and drive, the same as you would in the UK.

Driving licence

UK driving licenceIt is compulsory to carry an International Driving Permit (IDP) when driving in Barbados. Make sure you have secured one before you leave the UK

Passport - You will also be required to carry your full UK driver's licence at all times, and well as your insurance documents.

Mobile phone use

The Barbadian law does not allow the use of mobile phones while driving unless you are using an approved hands-free kit..
