For fine dining

There are lots of places to splurge in Tenerife. Santa Cruz's El Rincón de Juan Carlos is a family-run Michelin-starred restaurant that deals in indulgent seafood, gastronomic traditions and breath-taking views. In Costa Adeje, La Cúpula is renowned for its intriguing Canarian fusion – think butterfish with kaffir lime sauce or eel with ras el hanout mayonnaise. It's a must-visit, also, because of its eclectic design and panoramic views.

For seafood

Freshly caught seafood is one of the area's delicacies, so Tenerife is loaded with places to eat classic Mediterranean fare. Down a side street in Puerto de la Cruz, Casa Paché has the vibe of Abuela's family recipes mixed with hyperlocal cuisine – don't forget to sample their tapas. Elsewhere, in Los Cristianos, El Cine has a fish and chip shop atmosphere and dishes up hake, octopus and cuttlefish that's good value and delicious.

h2>For British dishes

Sometimes you crave familiarity, and Tenerife has a wealth of British or British-inspired restaurants to make you feel at home. Oliver's Out of Town in Arona comes highly recommended – they do a mean Sunday roast. In Playa de las Américas, Empire serves upmarket pub grub. Go here for steak and ale pie, fish and chips or bangers and mash.

For desserts

It's all about the gelato for pudding in Tenerife. Costa Adeje's Gelateria Fiore di Latte has homemade ice cream in a variety of flavours, while Gelateria Exotica in Playa de Fañabé also makes their offerings daily in the shop. Across the island, look out for spots selling Principe Alberto, a tiramisu-style dessert and

quesillo

– flan with a caramel topping.
