Cumbria's Wastwater 'Britain's favourite view'

September 2007

The Wastwater lake in Cumbria's Wasdale Valley is officially Britain's favourite view, according to an ITV show.

The programme saw a number of picturesque spots nominated by celebrities, with Coronation Street actress Sally Whittaker giving her backing to the Lake District location.

In the live final Wastwater won out over the Gower Peninsula in Wales, Bamburgh Castle in Northumberland and Stangford Lough in Northern Ireland.

Ms Whittaker said that the exposure of the location could encourage a boost in tourism to the Lake District.

"I'm really thrilled and hopefully even more people will go off to the Lake District now," she said.

"There are so many beautiful views in the Lake District – every view is amazing and it is such an inspirational and magical place to be."

Wastwater is three miles long, nearly half a mile wide and 258 feet deep, making it the deepest lake in England. It is overlooked by Scafell Pike, England's highest mountain at 3,210 feet.
