It's understandable if you've considered rail or coach travel and they are not suitable options, forcing you to drive.
Many services may not run from your local area or they are difficult to get to when you have lots of luggage to carry. If you've looked at all of the other options on getting to the airport, but you still want to be green, here's some tips on making your trip by car as eco-friendly as possible.
Firstly, one thing to refrain from is getting your friend to give you a lift. It means that they'll be making two extra unnecessary journeys, resulting in increased fuel usage and pollution. If you're taking your own car, it means you'll only be making two trips, rather than four.
So, you're taking your own car, but how can you cut down on fuel usage and therefore lower your carbon footprint? There's a few things you can do to not only help protect the environment, but also to help you save money too.

Do you need to take that extra suitcase? If you don't need it, don't take it. The more excess weight you carry in your luggage, the more fuel that your car will consume.
Is that roof rack or roof box needed? If you can fit your luggage and suitcases into your vehicle, rather than on a rack or in a roof box, leave them at home. It just adds more weight, meaning excess fuel and emissions.
Don't rush. Leave plenty of time to get to the airport or airport car park. Going faster means you'll be using more fuel. So, not only will you be increasing pollution, but you'll be spending more money too.
Know your way. It sounds pretty obvious, but know your route or use a sat nav. Getting lost means an extended route, resulting in wasted fuel.
Tyre pressures. If your tyres are under-inflated, it means they'll create more rolling resistance which results in excess fuel being used. Always check your tyres before you travel. You'll find the manufacturers' inflation instructions in your car's manual or on the edge of the driver's door.
