New Zealand is a country that's world-famous for its ecotourism holidays and stunning natural environment.
There are countless eco-tours you can take here, but one we'll focus on is a tour of Tiritiri Matangi Island.
After an intense period of farming and deforestation, the island was transformed in the 1980s and 1990s. A movement including locals, birdwatchers and scientists started a project to help rebuild the ecosystem, planting over 300,000 trees and plants in 10 years. Native species were reintroduced and the island is now one of New Zealand's top birdwatching and ecotourism destinations.
Tiritiri is a birdwatcher's paradise, with approximately 80 different species of birds on the island including the little spotted kiwi, takahe, tieke, kkako, stitchbird and brown teal. The success of the regeneration on Tiritiri has inspired copycat operations in other regions around New Zealand.
If birdwatching isn't your thing, there's still plenty to do in New Zealand for the green traveller. Whale watching, glacier walking, climbing and visiting Tane Mahuta, the largest tree in New Zealand, are just some of the activities available for the curious traveller.
