The European commission yesterday gave approval for a big expansion of EU regional airports, including more than a dozen in Britain, to combat congestion at major hubs and encourage low-cost airlines.
The commission has set guidelines for state aid to airports handling fewer than 5 million passengers a year enabling them to grant aid of up to 50% of a low-cost airlines's start-up costs. New regional air services will encourage mobility in Europe and regional development.
Eligible UK airports include East Midlands, Aberdeen, Prestwick, Southampton and Exeter.
