US Airways to serve Heathrow

US Airways has announced that it will begin its first service to London Heathrow next year.

American carrier US Airways will launch its inaugural service to London Heathrow on March 29th next year.

The operator will fly to the London hub from its Philadelphia base using the Airbus A330, which offers 29 envoy and 259 economy seats.

US Airways will increase the number of European destinations served from its Philadelphia base to 20 with the new route, which will be its seventh new transatlantic service since 2006.

Airline president Scott Kirby said: "We are extremely excited to enter the lucrative Heathrow market and bring this valuable service to the Philadelphia community.

"We were fortunate to identify a unique opportunity to acquire landing and takeoff rights at Heathrow and given Heathrow's importance as a European gateway as well as its close proximity to London for business travellers, we are pleased to take advantage of that opportunity."

The launch of the new service was made possible by the completion of the EU-US Open Skies agreement earlier this year.

US Airways currently serves 19 million passengers a year at its Philadelphia hub, on 390 daily flights to 108 destinations around the world.
