The seaside town of Southwold has been named as the quintessential British holiday resort.

A survey carried out by Teletext Holidays said that the Suffolk town's traditional beach huts, working lighthouse and fish and chip shops helped Southwold take the top spot.

Other factors which were deemed to be important for the perfect British holiday spot were donkey rides, amusement arcades and the availability of sticks of rock. In addition, people revealed that they still believe that deckchairs, titillating postcards and scenic countryside were important for UK holiday resorts.

Newquay, Scarborough, Bournemouth and Brighton completed Teletext's top five UK holiday resorts.

Matt Cheevers, managing director of Teletext Holidays, commented: "The classic British holiday resort is still as popular today as it has ever been."

Recently, an industry expert said that long delays at UK airports were encouraging more British families to consider UK holidays.

Catherine Hanly, editor of raisingkids.co.uk, explained: "After this summer parents may think twice about going away by plane, given how long the queues are - in and out of the country."
