Music used to boost UK tourism

The UK's tourist body, VisitBritain, has unveiled a new partnership which it hopes will help boost the country's reputation as a holiday destination.

By teaming up with the UK record label EMI Music, VisitBritian hopes to promote regional tourism in the country by highlighting the musical legacy of various towns.

To this end, various editorial articles will appear on the VisitBriatin website, showing where great British bands called home and encouraging tourists to travel to see where their favourite groups got together and worked.

Announcing the partnership, VisitBritain chief executive Tom Wright said: "British music and musicians, solo artists and bands are often someone's first introduction to the unique appeals of this country.

"Our partnership with EMI Music will help us showcase the places behind the music and encourage them to visit."

Mr Wright added that "21 per cent of potential visitors are inspired to choose a destination because of the music or bands of that country".

For example, the project will highlight Liverpool's rich musical history, pointing out that the Beatles, Atomic Kitten, Marc Almond, the Spice Girls' Mel C, Gerry and the Pacemakers and Cilla Black all called the city home.

Giles Harris, head of business development at EMI Music concluded: "We're all so used to plugging in to our favourite music while on holiday, now visitors can download their favourite British tracks and indulge their senses for a thoroughly British holiday experience."
