National Parks remain popular

The UK's National Parks are more popular than ever, a new study has revealed.

Ahead of National Parks Week - which runs from July 30th to August 5th - research has been released which shows that 93 per cent of people from the UK think the areas are important to them.

The most visited National Park by UK holidaymakers was the Lake District. In fact, 70 per cent of respondents to the survey said they had visited the area - up from 64 per cent in 2001.

Walking remains the most popular activity for people holidaying in National Parks. However, 18 per cent also said they visited the areas as part of a holiday with friends.

"This survey shows what huge leisure assets our National Parks are for outdoor activities as well as being important reserves for wildlife, beacons of sustainable development and green tourism," commented chairman of the UK Association of National Park Authorities, John Riddle.

"They contain the finest landscapes in the UK and are an important part of the nation's heritage, available for everyone to enjoy free of charge and safeguarded for future generations."

Recent findings suggest that the number of domestic holidays taken by Brits is set to rise to 129 million trips over the next 20 years.
