According to a recent survey the number of UK internet users in 2005 grew at almost twice the rate for both previous years.
56.3% of the UK adult population said they had used the internet in 2005, representing a year-on-year growth of 13%, compared with 7% growth in both 2003 and 2004. Just over 23.5m were home internet users, 76% (18m) said they connected to the internet via broadband. Nearly 1m people have used wifi in public.
The survey also found that 17% of respondents (4.5m) had used their mobile phone to connect to the web, with the mobile provider's home page the most commonly visited site (56%), followed by news (47%), sports (46%), search engines (42%) and travel sites (42%).
