Songs encourage summer holiday bookings

To launch its summer holiday programme Jet2holidays.com is sponsoring buskers to play the top holiday songs as revealed by a new poll.

More than 1,000 people across the UK were asked by the holiday company to name the song that most put them in the holiday spirit, and that perennial favourite ‘Good Vibrations’ by The Beach Boys came out on top with 19.1% of the vote.

Runner up with 15.1% was another old favourite, the aptly named ‘Summer Holiday” by Cliff Richard. ‘Club Tropicana’ by Wham came third with 11.4%, followed by Ricky Martin’s ‘Livin’ La Vida Loca’ (10.9%) and ‘Summer Nights’ (9.4%) from the musical Grease by John Travolta and Olivia Newton-John.

Now Jet2holidays.com is paying buskers to play the top five songs in British cities as a subtle way to encourage them to book their summer holiday. Shoppers in Newcastle, Manchester and Leeds are first on the list of cities being targeted by the Jet2holidays.com-sponsored buskers.

“The weather has been pretty bad so far this winter and there’s a lot of general doom and gloom around, so we wanted to do something a bit different to get the public back into the holiday spirit,” explains Jet2holidays.com managing director, Richard Bodin.

“To kick off our summer holiday campaign, which has seven-night breaks from £99 per person, we’ve been on the streets serenading the public with the nation’s favourite holiday tunes and strumming up a bit of trade,” Bodin adds.

Jet2holidays.com’s research also revealed that a favourite holiday song keeps holiday memories alive for more than six months for 49% of those questioned. No less than 40% also said their holiday song would encourage them to revisit the same holiday destination again.

Just missing out on a top 5 place but rounding out the top 10 of the nation’s favourite holiday tunes were: ‘Holiday’ by Madonna, ‘Hotel California’ by The Eagles, ‘Macarena’ by Los del Rio, ‘Loco in Acapulco’ by the Four Tops and ‘We’re Going To Ibiza’ by Vengaboys.
