An investment of £50 million has gone in to the redevelopment of Terminal 1, the top-of-the-line terminal at Manchester Airport.

The creation took place over a two year period and makes Terminal 1 one of the largest airside shopping and catering spaces.

The decision to redesign the terminal was made after top psychologists monitored travellers' body language and conversations to understand the emotions passengers felt from the time they arrived at the terminal until boarding the plane. They discovered that key points of stress were shown at the car parks, at check-in and at the security gate.

Andrew Cornish, managing director for Manchester Airport, said: "Our terminal redesigns have had to withstand the test of time, with the liquid ban and the terrorist attack on Glasgow Airport meaning we had to take them back to the drawing board several times, always putting our customers' safety and security at the forefront of our designs."

Among the spending is £15 million by retail brands - such as Kurt Geiger and Starbucks - to improve the pre-flight experience.
