A380 begins Heathrow flights on 18 March

Heathrow airport will welcome the Airbus A380 superjumbo for the first time on 18 March after the inaugural flight from Singapore.

The first commercial flight of the new A380 took place last October operated by Singapore Airlines on its Singapore to Sydney route. Heathrow will be the first airport in Europe to welcome the A380 on a commercial flight.

Singapore Airlines flight SQ 308 will leave Changi airport in Singapore at 0900 on 18 March and arrive at Heathrow at 1505. On the same day flight SQ 319 will depart Heathrow at 1855 arriving in Singapore at 1535 on 19 March.

“The A380 will provide a capacity expansion on the popular Singapore-London route. For the first time, an aircraft larger than the B747-400 will fly this route, thereby meaning more seats without the need for more frequencies to what is already one of the world’s busiest airports,” says Singapore Airlines executive vice president marketing and regions, Huang Cheng Eng.

Passengers on the inaugural flights to and from Heathrow on 18 March will receive personalised certificates recognising their participation in the milestone event, as well as limited edition Singapore Airlines A380 souvenirs and exclusive premium giveaways.

Tickets can be booked through www.singaporeair.com or travel agents. Tickets for the first ever commercial flight of the A380 between Singapore and Sydney were auctioned on ebay, selling for between $560 and $100,380 with the money raised going to charity.

Singapore Airlines currently has two A380s in service, with a further 17 on order and options on six more. There are 471 seats on SIA’s A380s in three classes – 12 in the ‘beyond first class’ Singapore Airlines Suites, 60 in business class and 399 in economy class.
