Summer may have ended, but Autumn certainly isn't all wind and wet weather. Firework season is upon us, and with it comes the smell of bonfires, sparklers and spectacular displays to light up the sky.
So get out there and enjoy one of the most magical times of the year, but remember fireworks can be dangerous if they're not used properly. Here are a few tips to make sure everything runs smoothly if you are attending a firework display or planning your own:
- Only buy fireworks marked BS 7114
- Always read the instructions by daylight
- Don't drink alcohol if you are setting off fireworks
- Store fireworks in a closed box
- Light fireworks at arm's length, using the taper provided
- Stand well back
- Never go near a firework that has been lit - even it hasn't gone off it could still explode
- Never put fireworks in your pocket or throw them
- Always supervise children around fireworks
- Light sparklers one at a time and wear gloves
- Never give sparklers to a child under five
- Keep pets indoors
What you will need if you are setting fireworks off
- Torch
- Bucket of water
- Eye protection and gloves
- Bucket of soft earth to put fireworks in
- Supports and launchers for catherine wheels or rockets
Enjoy the fireworks and have a great time!
