Lovers of all things associated with the romantic image of America's Wild West may find themselves drawn to South Dakota on September 29th for the annual buffalo round-up.

Custer State Park staff gather every autumn to usher a 1,500-strong herd of buffalo into corrals.

Viewing areas are designated where watchers can get an excellent look at the proceedings without being in any danger from the jostling mass of animals.

After the round-up visitors can stay to watch the herd being branded and the calves vaccinated.

The buffalo are rounded up every year in preparation for the autumn sales – some animals have to be sold as there is only enough winter pasture to sustain a herd of a certain size.

In association with this event is the annual Buffalo Round-up Arts Festival, a showcase of the work of artists from the region.

People who would like to experience the tastes as well as the sights on offer in this part of America may want to arrive a day early for the Buffalo Wallow chilli cook-off, where chilli enthusiasts can take part, or just enjoy the end-products.
