Lovers of all things ghoulish and ghastly will soon be preparing to jet off to New York City to take part in its famous Halloween parade.

Now in its 34th year, the event is America's largest public celebration of Halloween and regularly attracts over two million people.

The parade is open to anyone who wants to attend, although only those who get into the spirit and don a costume will be allowed to take part.

Those suitably attired should gather on 6th Avenue south of Spring Street at around 18:30 local time to join hundreds of puppets, bands, dancers, artists and thousands of other revellers to make their way through Greenwich Village.

The parade had humble beginnings in 1973 when a local mask maker and puppeteer took his children and their friends on a Halloween night walk through the neighbourhood. After two years a local theatre group stepped in to produce the parade on a larger scale.

Since then the celebration has received an award from the Municipal Arts Society of New York for its contribution to the cultural life of the city and has been voted the 'greatest event on earth on October 31st' by Events International.
