Rhine 'illuminated by fireworks'

The mighty Rhine river in Germany is set to be illuminated with a series of spectacular pyrotechnic events over the summer.

This weekend (July 7th), the Rhine in Flames event comes to east Germany as a stretch of the river between Bingen and Rudesheim is bathed in light.

More than 50 decorated boats will parade down the water between the two towns and Bengal fire - an eerie blue effect - will be used to illuminate many of the castles and churches along the stretch.

Later in the summer, the events will continue at other locations on the banks of the river.

These include, on September 8th, an impressive firework display at Oberwesel in the heart of the Rhine Gorge. This will be accompanied by music and more than 40 ships gently floating down the stream.

The event is set to conclude on September 15th, when a festival in the towns of St Goar and St Goarshausen will offer local wine and delicacies. Four different firework displays will bathe the river in light one last time.
