Valencia gears up for surfeit of sport

The Spanish region of Valencia is preparing itself for a year of major sporting events in 2008.

Following its successful hosting of the 32nd America's Cup sailing contest this year, the Spanish region of Valencia is preparing for a year of sporting occasions in 2008.

Four major events will take place in the Valencia province next year, which the region's tourist board claims will consolidate its status as a "great sporting destination".

First up will be the Athletics World Indoor Championships between March 7th and 9th, which will bring the world's elite athletes and thousands of fans to the Palau Velodromo Luis Puig.

The major sporting event of the summer will be Valencia's hosting of the Formula One European Grand Prix on August 24th.

This race is a brand new addition to the F1 calendar and will run on an urban circuit along Valencia's seafront, with stands set up to accommodate some 150,000 spectators.

October 4th will see the Volvo Ocean Race, the world's premier offshore yachting event, launch in Alicante before the Motorcycling Grand Prix roars into life at the Ricardo Tormo circuit in Cheste, about an hour inland from the city of Valencia.
