Over 1m of snow in Tirol

Over a metre of snow has fallen in the Austrian Tirol, the tourist board has revealed.

More than a metre of snow has fallen in Austria's Tirol ski region, the local tourist board has confirmed.

Following a period of low coverage in the area, winter sports fans have now been treated to the biggest November snowfall for over 30 years.

It is not the only the glacier areas and the high-altitude locations that have seen snow, as popular resorts such as St Anton and Kitzbuhel are under 1.5 metres of powder.

Five ski glaciers are already open to take advantage of the ski conditions and a number of areas in the Tirol are opening a month earlier than planned.

Forecasts suggest that the good conditions for skiers and snowboarders are set to continue for some time, with more snowfall expected this week.

The development appears to have come just in time for winter sports fans, with a report from American Express recently indicating that many are travelling to high-altitude locations as far away as Chile and Japan in search of good snow conditions.
