Japan has beaten New Zealand and Namibia to be named favourite holiday destination.

This is the first time that Japan has appeared in the top 10 countries in the annual Wanderlust Travel Awards, after years of jostling between New Zealand and Namibia for the number one slot.

Almost 3,000 seasoned travellers voted in the awards, which are based on customer satisfaction over the past year. Japan received an impressive 97.42% satisfaction rating, with Namibia receiving 96.21% and New Zealand 95.75%.

Wanderlust readers like Japan’s diversity, from Tokyo’s fluorescent skyscapes and hi-tech loos, to the tranquil scenery of Mount Fuji. The wildlife and culinary experiences were also a big hit.

Other favourite countries to visit for Wanderlust readers included the oft-maligned Syria, which came fourth in the top country category, and its political ally Iran which came 11th. In total Wanderlust readers visited more than 170 countries and 631 cities in the last year.

More good news for Japanese tourism is that Kyoto has been voted runner up in the favourite city category. “I’m thrilled that Japan has topped the charts. I plan to go for my first visit next year and like our readers, I have long been intrigued by Japanese culture. I feel that there is so much to see there that we don't hear about in the UK,” comments Wanderlust editor-in-chief Lyn Hughes.

Antigua in Guatemala was voted top city overall, ending the two year reign of Luang Prabang in Laos. Antigua was praised for its characterful shops and cafes, vibrant market and friendly people.

A new category in the Wanderlust Travel Awards this year was the top rail journey. More than 400 rail journeys were nominated, but the West Highland Line in Scotland came out top.

The scenic Glasgow-Mallaig line skirts lochs and shaggy Highland cattle and crosses a 21-arch viaduct at Glenfinnan before hitting the coast with spectacular views of the isles of Eigg, Muck and Rum.

Two train journeys in Peru were runners up. The Cuzco to Puno line was in second place, and Cuzco to Macchu Picchu in third.
