Britain's over-50s could become one of the strongest sectors within the travel market, with nearly 11 million people of this age planning to travel more regularly in the next five to ten years, according to research.

An Alliance & Leicester poll found that 54 per cent of over-50s want to travel more often and 22 per cent hope to go on a 'once in a lifetime' holiday in the next ten years.

Over a quarter (26 per cent) of the respondents said that Australia or New Zealand would be their preferred destination, while 21 per cent said they would like to visit countries in Europe and nine per cent showed an interest in the USA.

Among the activities that people over the age of 50 showed an interest in trying were flying a helicopter (ten per cent), off-road driving (nine per cent) and scuba diving (seven per cent).

Emma Walkley of Alliance & Leicester said: "The desire of the over-50s to see more of the world is clear - this is not an age group that plans to sit back and enjoy a slower pace of life.

"Quite the opposite in fact, with long-haul destinations and a thirst for adventure firmly on the agenda."
