Travel insurance company Mondial Assistance has produced a new survey showing the most popular summer holiday destinations for Europeans.
The survey is based on analysis of 418,000 travel insurance contracts booked on the websites of European airlines for flights between 15th June and 15th September.
Not surprisingly, Spain proves to be the favourite destination for 25.3% of travellers taking flights between these dates. Second place goes to Italy with 14.1%, followed by the UK with 13.8% and France with 9.4%.
Perennially popular France perhaps unexpectedly only ranks among the top 3 destinations for the French, British, Portuguese and Swiss.
Given the choice of fabulous beaches, historic cities and vibrant culture, the Spanish are the nation that most like to holiday at home. More than one third - 35.8% - of Spaniards will stay at home, but 16.9% will travel to the UK and 14% to Italy.
The British love affair with Spain continues as 31.7% booked flights to the country. By contrast only 10.2% booked flights to France, while 14.1% planned to holiday in the UK.
Mondial Assistance also looked at the average length of summer holiday planned for each nation. Overall the average summer holiday break is 10 days, but the Polish seem to like a longer break as their average summer holiday is 13.8 days.
The traditional two week summer holiday appears to be declining in popularity for Brits. Average length of a break for Brits according to the survey is 8.3 days. Only the Swedes 8 days take a shorter summer holiday.
