And Then There Were None - Themes - from the London Show

Please note that this production is no longer showing in London's West End

1 little soldier boy left all alone,
He went and hung himself and then there were none

Based on a story and poem entitled Ten Little Soldier Boys, And Then There Were None follows 10 strangers with apparently nothing in common, who are invited to an exclusive island mansion. It is not long before the first of their number is murdered.....

Kevin Elyot and Agatha Christie

And Then There Were None is the most popular of all Christie's novels, and the theatre production has audiences enthralled night after night. 'The Queen of Crime' - Agatha Christie wrote 80 novels and 19 plays in her lifetime, with some of her best loved characters gracing the television in popular series' Poirot and Miss Marple. In an attempt to re-popularise Christie for the modern audience, Steven Pimlott and Kevin Elyot have adapted And Then There Were None using sophisticated technology and graphic horror to satisfy the desensitised audiences of the twenty first century.

Kevin Elyot has previously adapted Christie's novels for television including a number of Poirot and Marple mysteries. Elyot drew his inspiration for the production not from the theatre production Agatha Christie created but from the novel, focusing on the themes of immorality, deceit and betrayal.

Themes

Trust
None of the strangers trust each other, this lack of trust in one another heightens paranoia and inevitably the tension. Wrought and anxious the ten strangers leave themselves vulnerable targets for the killer or killers.

Deceit
All of the characters are hiding a secret, deceiving themselves and others in to believing what they want to believe.

Immorality
Characters loose their lives through other peoples immoral actions - a popular theme in Agatha Christie novels.

Guilt and justice are also strong themes used in the production, but by offering an explanation would lead to the possible revelation of the ending and whodunnit!

And Then There Were None is now playing at the Gielgud Theatre
