Turkish holiday specialist goes bust

Travel company K and S Holidays which specialised in holidays to Turkey has gone bust stranding about 150 customers abroad.

The holiday firm, which also traded as Travel Turkey, was ATOL bonded so customers are protected and will be flown home at the end of their holidays. The Civil Aviation Authority, which is responsible for repatriation flights, has confirmed that a plane will be chartered to return the K&S Holidays customers to the UK.

As well as the 150 customers already abroad, most of them believed to be in the Bodrum area of Turkey, more than 400 other people are believed to have had holidays booked with K&S Holidays. As they are ATOL protected they should be able to reclaim the cost of their holiday in due course. The Civil Aviation Authority is advising everyone who has booked with K&S not to travel to the airport.

About 50 K&S customers are said to have checked in at Manchester airport for a flight to Dalaman in Turkey on Saturday only to be told that the company had gone bust and therefore their flight had been cancelled.

K&S Holidays is based in North London, and was a small, specialist travel company so the repercussions of its failure will not be felt anywhere near as widely as the failure of the XL Leisure Group. The company organised package tours to Turkey and mainly used planes chartered through Turkish airline Onur Air.

There has been plenty of speculation in the media about which airlines and tour operators will be next to go bust. With oil prices still high and no signs of the economic situation getting any better it is almost certain there will be more high profile casualties in the holiday industry before the end of the year. Now that the peak holiday season is over many airlines and tour operators may not have the cash flow necessary to enable them to survive.
