Low cost airline easyJet has compiled a guide to the best ski resorts as skiing and snowboarding holidays are boosted by great early season snow.

Many European ski resorts have opened early this year thanks to the best early season conditions for years. Now easyJet has produced a guide to the top resorts for snow fall this season, based on the latest snow reports from the Ski Club of Great Britain.

The budget airline also now offers an interactive ski map on its website, showing the best airports to fly to for all the major resorts, along with transfer times and prices.

Based on snow fall and facilities, the best ski resorts for Christmas are said to be Alpbach and Lech-Zurs, both in Austria. Snow in Lech-Zurs is currently rated as ‘excellent’ and the resort has lots of seasonal events, including Christmas markets and a nativity play. Alpbach is described as “a chocolate-box collection of houses, wooden lodges and churches” which provide the perfect backdrop for a fairytale Christmas.

Both Alpbach and Lech-Zurs can be reached by easyJet flights from Gatwick, Bristol and Liverpool airports. Transfers from Innsbruck airport to Lech-Zurs take about two hours, while Alpbach is within easy reach of Innsbruck and Salzburg airports.

The best resorts for early season snow are considered to be Courmayr in Italy, Verbier in Switzerland, Kaprun in Austria, and Glenshee in Scotland, all of which currently have excellent snow.

Glenshee is a 1 hour 30 minute drive from Edinburgh, or 2 hours from Glasgow. easyJet flights to Glasgow and Edinburgh are available from Gatwick, Stansted, Luton, Bristol and Belfast airports. Glenshee is the most extensive skiing area in Scotland with 25 miles of downhill runs over four mountains and three valleys.

In these cash-strapped times the best ski resorts for budget holidays are also named. Bansko in Bulgaria currently has excellent snow and is regarded as one of Europe’s most up and coming ski resorts. easyJet flies to Sofia airport from Gatwick and Manchester airports, from where it is a 2 hour 45 minute drive to Bansko.

The other ski resort recommended for budget-conscious skiers and snowboarders is Pila in Italy. Ski tuition here is said to be about “half the price of more flashy resorts in France and Switzerland”. The resort is about 1 hour 30 minutes from Turin airport with flights from Luton.
