First Airbus A380 ready for service

The first Airbus A380 superjumbo has been delivered to Singapore Airlines, marking the start of a new era in luxury long-haul travel.

The double-decker A380 is the largest passenger plane ever built, and Singapore Airlines first A380 will have 471 seats in three classes - economy, business, and what the airline describes as 'beyond first class' - The A380 Service will be called Singapore Airlines Suites

Most of the seats for the first return flight of the new A380 from Singapore to Sydney on 25 October were sold on auction site eBay. The proceeds are being donated to charities in Singapore and Sydney and a global humanitarian organisation.

Scheduled daily flights of the A380 between Singapore and Sydney will start on 28 October. Singapore Airlines has placed firm orders for nineteen A380's, and one of the new superjumbos is expected to begin daily flights from Heathrow airport to Singapore in the first quarter of 2008.

Major airports around the world have been getting ready for the A380. Changi airport in Singapore has been constructing an 'aerobridge' at 19 gates that will enable access to both decks of the A380.

The 'beyond first' Singapore Airlines Suites will have fully adjustable seats almost a metre wide. A separate full-flat bed will also be provided in each Suite, along with 58cm LCD screens. There will be 12 Suites on each A380, plus 60 business and 399 economy class seats. Business class seats at 86cm will be the widest available on any airline and will convert into a full-flat bed.

Passengers on Singapore Airlines A380's are also in for a culinary treat. Gordon Ramsay is one of the celebrity chefs responsible for creating the new menus for the planes.
