A380 seat sells for £50,000

As the countdown to the first commercial flight of the new Airbus A380 superjumbo on 25 October continues it has been revealed that seat 1A sold for £50,000 on eBay.

The lucky winning bidder was Julian Hayward, a 38 year old Brit currently based in Sydney. Seat 1A is, not surprisingly, in first class. Singapore Airlines, which will operate the flight between Singapore and Sydney, claims to have created a 'beyond first' class experience with its Singapore Airlines Suites. These feature seats almost a metre wide, plus a separate full-flat bed.

The eBay auction for seats on the return flight of the first A380 from Singapore to Sydney raised almost £1 million for charity. An anonymous buyer from Singapore bought three Suites, two business class seats and an economy class seat for $56,000. At the other end of the scale, an economy class seat sold for just $560.

The charities benefiting from the auction are the global humanitarian organisation Medecins Sans Frontieres, Singapore Community Chest, Sydney Children's Hospital and The Children's Hospital at Westmead in Sydney.

Singapore Airlines A380 will begin a regular service between Singapore and Sydney from 28 October. Suites will cost £3,500 each way. From early next year the airline will also start operating a daily service on an A380 between Singapore and Heathrow.
