Now Showing: Wicked
Book Wicked at The Apollo Victoria Theatre on line

Wicked is the spellbinding story of how the witches of Oz came to be - Glinda the Good Witch and the Wicked Witch of the West. Elphaba and Glinda are unlikely friends, polar opposites in fact but they still become firm friends when they meet at the school of sorcery in Oz. Watch as the story twists and turns, and the two friends become the two witches we have come to know and love.

The Building Design of the Apollo Victoria Theatre
The Cinema was designed by W Lewis. The typically 1930's ribbing on the exterior of the building was brought into sharp focus by the use of neon lighting. The original auditorium was designed as a mermaid's palace. With huge flowers branching upwards and lights like glass stalactites hanging down from above. The proscenium arch was adorned with slender silver columns on each side. The area above the arch was decorated with faux silver organ pipes, giving the illusion of a waterfall. The theatre auditorium was decorated with an aquatic theme, making use of fish, shells and waves.

Sadly most of the original interior is now lost. The theatre is designed with the stalls below ground and the main foyer in the balcony void area. The building has two identical facades one on Vauxhall Bridge Road and the other on Wilton Road. The Wilton Road entrance is decorated with two bas-relief panels depicting an audience watching a film.

The History of The Apollo Victoria Theatre
The Apollo Victoria is a grade II listed building. The Apollo Victoria first opened as a cinema in 1930 and was called the New Victoria Cine-Variety Theatre. The cinema closed in 1975 reopening for live entertainment in 1981 under it's present name. The opening show at the Apollo Victoria Theatre was a Shirley Bassey concert.

In 1984 over 1000 seats where removed to accommodate a roller-skating track and much of the auditorium was blacked out for Andrew Lloyd Webber's musical 'Starlight Express' which ran until 2002. At the end of the season the Apollo Victoria Theatre was refurbished, the seats reinstated and its former glory restored. The new musical Bombay Dreams, produced by Andrew Lloyd Webber opened in June 2002.

Facilities at The Apollo Victoria Theatre
The Apollo Victoria Theatre has induction loop and an infra-red system in the auditorium and can cater for wheelchair users and guide dogs.
Location of The Apollo Victoria Theatre
The theatre is on Wilton Road, opposite Victoria Train Station.
