The Show
The famous trilogy written by J.R.R. Tolkein takes to the stage in this adaptation from Kevin Wallace and Saul Zaentz. Prepare to be amazed as this production pushes the boundaries of theatre to the very limit, an epic production that will have you cowering in your seat and shouting out loud

The Building Design of the Theatre Royal
The original 1663 theatre was destroyed in the Great Fire of London. The next theatre was reputed to have been designed by Sir Christopher Wren. Subsequently the theatre has been demolished, rebuilt and burned down once more!
The fourth and present building, was designed by Benjamin Wyatt and opened in 1812. Since then the interior has been continually improved and re-decorated resulting in one of London's grandest foyers complete with columns, gilded mouldings, beautiful chandeliers and a sweeping marble staircase.

The Theatre Royal of today has a four-tiered auditorium dating from 1922 with a capacity of 2,283. The proscenium arch is 42 ft. wide. The huge stage is 80 ft deep with impressive backstage areas, ideal for staging large scale musicals.

The History of The Theatre Royal Drury Lane
The Theatre Royal Drury Lane has more history than any theatre still in use in Great Britain. Past productions have ranged from circus to opera.
The Theatre Royal has played a leading role in some of the most important developments in world theatre; when it opened in 1663 it was one of two venues in London where drama could legally be staged and it was the first playhouse in the world to officially introduce female actors.
David Garrick, the legendary English actor very successfully managed the theatre during the mid-eighteenth century during which time he staged most of Shakespeare's work. Richard Sheridan bought his shares in 1776, and was responsible for some of the theatre's greatest highs and lows. Sarah Siddon's Lady Macbeth and John Philip Kemble's Hamlet made theatre history. When the theatre was declared unsafe in 1792 Sheridan raised the phenomenal sum of £150,000 to rebuild it only for it to burn down in 1809 leaving Sheridan bankrupt and destitute.
Over the last century the Drury Lane Theatre has become associated with some of the most lavish and exuberant musicals ever staged in London. Noel Coward's Cavalcade had a huge cast of over four hundred members. The size of the stage area allows spectacular set design and scenic techniques. Productions have included earthquakes, avalanches, explosions, chariot races, shipwrecks and a horse race with real horses!
During the second world war the theatre was kept very much alive in the role of Headquarters of ENSA (Entertainments National Service Association).

'Through the Stage Door'
'Through the Stage Door' is a new attraction run at The Theatre Royal which allows visitors a behind the scenes tour of this fascinating theatre. The tour last about an hour, is led by professional actors and must be booked in advance.

Facilities at The Theatre Royal Drury Lane
The Theatre has infra-red or loop sound amplification in the auditorium and can accommodate wheelchair users.
Location of The Theatre Royal
Although called The Theatre Royal, Drury Lane, the entrance is actually on Catherine Street in Covent Garden.
