Gone with the Wind is a classic tale of tragedy and romance set to the backdrop of the Civil War. A best selling novel and a high grossing film, Gone with the Wind has now been adapted for the stage, book today to see this legendary film come to life.
The Building Design of the New London Theatre
The New London theatre was designed by Paul Tvrtkovic in the 1970's and therefore the building is very modern in its design encompassing the clean lines and style of the seventies.
Huge mirrored walls mark the New London theatre as a modern equivalent to its more majestic neighbours. With a capacity for just over one thousand visitors across two levels the New London theatre is quite small in comparison to some theatres in the West End but the proximity of the audience to the stage creates an intimate atmosphere.
The auditorium was built to be completely adaptable - a third of the stalls revolve and the stage, lighting and walls are movable. The idea behind the "build your own stage" was that the New London theatre could then adapt and accommodate any type of production, leaving the staging to the directors discretion.
The overall affect of the building is impressive, the clean, sleek lines of the structure and revolutionary use of space inside make this theatre unique not only in design but also in its implementation.
The History of the New London Theatre
The New London theatre first opened its doors to the public in 1972 with a concert given by Marlene Dietrich, which was recorded and later televised. The theatre then officially opened in June 1973 with the production The Unknown Soldier and his Wife starring Peter Ustinov.
Other London shows once shown at the New London Theatre include, Grease starring Richard Gere as Danny Zuko, Cats which ran for 21 years from 1981, playing to audiences a huge 8,949 times and Joseph and the Technicolour Dreamcoat.
From 1977 - 1980 the theatre was used as a TV studio, only reopening in 1981 as a theatre when it became the London home for the West End hit musical, Cats. Previously two other theatres have stood on this site, in 1851 a building was constructed for use as a musical hall and was known as the Middlesex Music Hall. In 1911 Frank Matcham rebuilt the hall, opening it as the Winter Garden in 1919. The building was then demolished in 1965 and the New London theatre rebuilt in its place in 1970.
Facilities at the New London Theatre
The theatre is fully air conditioned, has a licensed bar and accommodates 1,106 people across two levels.
Guide dogs are not permitted within the auditorium but arrangements can be made to have your dog looked after by staff during a performance. Infra red headsets are available on request.
