Now Showing: The Phantom of the Opera
Book The Phantom of the Opera at Her Majesty's Theatre on line
The story of the Phantom of the Opera is set in Paris and tells the haunting tale of a disfigured musical genius living in the Opera House, who terrorizes the opera company for the unwitting benefit of Christine, a young protege whom he trains and loves. The arrival of Raoul and his subsequent relationship with Christine destroys the Phantom and plunges the trio into a dangerous web of love and despair.
The Building Design of Her Majesty's Theatre
Like The Savoy Theatre, the present design of Her Majesty's Theatre was the idea of architect C.J. Phipps who built it for Herbert Beerbohm Tree in 1897. Mr Tree wanted simply going to his theatre to be a thrill, he wished to create an atmosphere of an important place where exciting things happened. Consequently, Her Majesty's Theatre is a stunning Grade II listed building dominated by the Edwardian fascination with French style. Its exterior is an impressive display of wealth and imperialism, and its interior delights with elegance and grandeur.
Renovations took place of the dome and the exterior in 1992, and of the interior in 1994 ensuring the majesty of the building is not lost.
The History of Her Majesty's Theatre
The current theatre is the 4th to occupy this site. The first, called The Queen's Theatre, was built by Sir John Vanbrugh in 1705. The theatre changed it's name to The Kings Theatre in 1714 when King George I came to the throne, however in 1789 the theatre was destroyed by fire.
The second theatre opened in 1791. It was here that Mozart's operas made their London debut. Between 1816 and 1818 John Nash and George Renton designed alterations to the auditorium and theatre facade.
When Queen Victoria's reign began the name of the theatre was changed to Her Majesty's Theatre, Italian Opera House . Sadly in 1867, the theatre was once again destroyed by fire.
The theatre was rebuilt in 1869 and demolished in 1892 leaving just the Royal Opera Arcade.
The current, and fourth, theatre on this site was designed by C J Phipps and opened in 1897.
The theatre built up a reputation for successful, long running productions. After the Second World War Her Majesty's Theatre showed a succession of popular musicals including Brigadoon in 1949, Paint Your Wagon in 1953, West Side Story in 1958 and Fiddler On The Roof in 1967.
The popular ITV variety series Live From Her Majesty's was staged at Her Majesty's Theatre and was screened on television from 1982 - 1985. It was on this programme that Tommy Cooper collapsed and died on stage in 1984.
The current production of Phantom of the Opera opened in 1986 and is still enjoyed today, cementing Her Majesty's theatre's reputation for long running productions. It celebrated its 7000th performance on 12th August 2003.
