Book The Lion King at The Lyceum Theatre on line

The Lion King is a magnificent adaptation of Disney's hugely successful animated film. When young lion prince Simba is born his evil uncle Scar is pushed back to second in line to the throne. Desperate to become King, Scar plots to kill Simba and his father Mufasa - leading Simba on an African adventure beyond his wildest dreams.

The Building Design of the Lyceum Theatre

The current Lyceum Theatre is of huge architectural importance due to the varying historical influences on its design. It has been remarked that as audiences approach the theatre they 'will enter through an early Victorian portico, sit down in an Edwardian auditorium and watch a performance on a stage that has been completely rebuilt for the 21st century.'
From 1994 to 1996 The Lyceum Theatre was totally refurbished. The portico was restored, the auditorium decorated in rich reds and golds and modern equipment installed.

The History of the Lyceum Theatre

There has been a theatre on the site of the Lyceum Theatre since 1772. This original theatre was demolished and replaced by another designed by Samuel Beazley in 1815. This theatre was one of the first theatres in London to be lit by gas. At first, gaslight was used solely for the facade and entrances of the theatre, then in 1817 gaslight was used to light the stage as well. Sadly this theatre burned down in 1830.
Samuel Beazley rebuilt the Lyceum Theatre which opened in the summer of 1834. This time the theatre was built with a splendid front portico.
In 1904 Beazley's theatre was demolished and rebuilt again by Bertie Crewe to comply with Fire Safety Regulations, however the original facade and portico were preserved.
In 1939 The London Lyceum Theatre was purchased by the LCC. The plan was to demolish the building to make way for road improvements. A massive auction of the theatre's fixtures and fittings took place including all the seats and curtains. Luckily, when Britain went to war the demolition of the Lyceum theatre was postponed.
The theatre remained dark until 1945 when it was converted to a huge Mecca dance hall. The hall was impressively decorated with multi-coloured wood inlays. In 1951 the first Miss World contest took place in the Lyceum Ballroom. The Miss World contest was originally intended to be a one-off event connected with the Festival of Britain.
During the 1960's and 1970's the London Lyceum was used as a venue, predominantly for rock concerts and television broadcasts. Theatre performances resumed briefly in 1985 with the transfer from The National Theatre's Cottesloe Theatre of the three part mystery plays by Tony Harrison. For nine more years the theatre was dark, however in 1994 the lease was purchased by Apollo Leisure (Clear Channel Entertainment) and the Lyceum was returned to its former glory in 1996.
