Female travellers celebrated on International Women's Day

Wanderlust travel magazine will mark International Women's Day on Saturday 8 March with the launch of its 'Girls Guide to Travel' and the search for 'Greatest Globe Trotting Girls of all Time’.

International Women's Day

The magazine, aimed at independent travellers, intends to provide women with tips for travelling safely alone in its new guide. The online poll will recognise the achievements of female adventurers from the past and present.

Wanderlust’s editor-in-chief, Lyn Hughes explains, “The typical adventure traveller today is a woman – in fact 55% of our readers are female and 67% of them have taken a solo trip in the last year. We want to applaud this on International Women’s Day and also encourage more girls to get out there and travel safely with our ‘Girls Guide to Travel’. At the same time, we wanted to recognise some of the great female travellers, which is why we are calling for people to vote in our on-line poll and celebrate the heroines of travel.”

Gertrude Bell, Freya Stark, Ellen MacArthur, Amelia Earhart, Isabella Bird and Dervla Murphy are all included on the shortlist. Readers are asked to vote for one of the shortlisted candidates or nominate their own heroine on the website from Saturday 8 March until Tuesday 8 April 2008, where they can also download a copy of the travel guide.

The results of the poll will be published in the June issue of the magazine and online.

Lyn adds, “We know that women have been intrepid travellers through the ages but for whatever reason they don’t seem to have achieved the recognition of their male counterparts. We have unearthed some fascinating women who have broken travel boundaries and done great things, and we want to celebrate them.”

International Women's Day has been observed for over a century to highlight the struggle for women's rights around the world. This year United Nations officials have urged all countries to mark International Women's Day on Saturday with renewed efforts to end rape, forced prostitution and other violence against women.
