Speculation has arisen that competition watchdogs are ready to order BAA (British Airports Authority) to sell one of the two main airports in Scotland namely Edinburgh or Glasgow.
It is thought by the Competition Commission that common ownership of the airports adversely affects the competition between them. A commission investigation is expected to order the sale of one of the Scottish airports and one of the three main BAA owned London airports.
Between the two Scottish airports, Glasgow is seen as the more likely target for sale due to the fact it's core charter traffic is declining, however BAA may also be given the option of selling Edinburgh Airport which is currently enjoying high levels of success.
The question remains as to the effect that the sale of either airport would have on passengers. With BAA accounting for nine in ten air passengers in lowland Scotland, owning some of the UK's busiest airports and the busiest airport in the world - Heathrow.
However there have been mixed reviews over a sell-off, with major business groups opposed and many airlines welcoming the idea. Nonetheless the jury is still out on whether a change in ownership would make a difference to passengers.
