The history of Tacos

The taco is a staple of Mexican food in Mexico and worldwide, but what is the history of the spicy delicious tortilla dish?

What is a taco?

A taco is a traditional Mexican dish consisting of a tortilla filled with a variety of meats such as chicken or beef. This is often supplemented with beans, vegetables such as peppers, and cheese. The dish is served on its own, although sometimes rice is used as a side dish.

Where was the taco invented?

The taco was likely invented in ocean-surrounded Baja California in the 1800s, where they were made with fish and vegetables. When Mexican migrants started to enter the United States in around 1905, they brought the taco with them. The taco then started to develop in Mexico and in America, with the taco becoming mainstream in America by the 1930s. Soon enough, the taco began to see new flavours in Mexico, where Lebanese workers brought pineapple and different meats such as pork.

Who made the first taco?

Although tacos have been around much longer, Glen Bell claims that he invented the first taco as we know it in the 1950s with the development of the hard shell that we use today. Glen Bell went on to create the fast food chain Taco Bell, which popularised Mexican food and started to call tacos by their name more frequently through his selling techniques.

Where did the word taco come from?

The word 'taco' also relates to the small charges that miners would use to excavate silver ore. This could mean that the origins of the food's name came from the mines, as Mexican migrants started to eat tacos on the job.
