Horse Riding Travel Insurance
Horse riding can be an incredibly fulfilling, therapeutic experience with many benefits both mentally and physically. At Holiday Extras, we want you to enjoy your horse riding holiday in complete peace of mind, knowing that you are covered for all eventualities with prices starting from *.
If you're planning on just having a trot along the beach, or maybe a gallop through some fields, then you needn't worry. Through picking either our single trip or annual multi-trip policies, and then tailor the level of cover for your holiday, you're automatically insured for horse riding — provided you don't attempt any Grand National-esque jumps!
Why choose Holiday Extras?
With Holiday Extras travel insurance, you can get cover for medical emergency, personal accident and legal expenses at no extra cost. Check out our competitive cover levels below:
If you do think that you'll be partaking in a bit of horse jumping or eventing (provided it's not polo or hunting), then you will need to add on an extra bit to your travel insurance policy. After going through the process of entering in your dates and location to get your quote, you then have the opportunity to opt for additional insurance cover for activities. To make sure you're completely secure while you're horsing around on holiday (jumping left, right and centre!) then make sure you add Extra Activity Cover - Pack 3 to your existing policy with prices starting from * for both the policy and the add-on.
Medical emergency expenses
This covers you for things like a broken arm or leg, and other injuries that you could sustain while horse riding. If you take a fall from your horse and need to be taken to hospital, you can be assured that our medical emergency insurance will have you covered for any hospital bills.
This is cover for when an accident causes damage to public property or other persons. Though it is unlikely to happen, it's good to know that you are insured against the eventuality.
Should an accident you are involved in, end up in a legal case being opened, then you are also insured against any legal expenses that could crop up.
This section of your policy applies when you receive an injury that has a lasting effect and results in significant changes to your life and the lives of your family members. This could include instances where the result is permanent physical disablement, or in the worst case scenario, death. Though you should never have to make use of this part of your policy, it is good to know that things will be taken care of on the financial side, should the worst happen.
As well as getting cover for the essentials, there's also the option to add additional cover to your travel insurance policy, which will cover for things like damage to rented equipment like tack, helmets, and other riding gear. If you are going cross country horse riding, then our extra cover will also cater for things like a search and rescue team, should you get lost and need this kind of assistance.
Search and rescue
this may be worth considering if you know you will be riding in unfamiliar terrain, and there is the chance that you could get lost. Search and rescue cover will cover for the necessary fees you are charged by local search and rescue teams and any emergency transfers to hospitals that are needed.
Cover for rental equipment
This will cover you for any of your personal or rented riding equipment that is lost, stolen, damaged or destroyed during your trip. Typically, this would apply to things like the horse's tack, your riding helmet and any other personal safety equipment you use during the ride.
Get additional cover for
- Up to £1,000 for personal sporting equipment.
- Cover for rented equipment £25 per day (up to £100)
What am I not covered for?
Our policies are designed to cover horse riding for entertainment and leisure purposes and do not cover professional or competitive riding. This would include riding for competitions, events, racing, jumping or hunting on horseback.
In addition, horse riding activities that are considered high risk, such as rodeo and polo are not covered under our insurance policies.
What if I have a pre-existing medical condition?
At Holiday Extras, we believe that everyone should be able to enjoy different activities on their holiday without being penalized by a high medical premium.
If you have any pre-existing medical conditions, it's still possible to enjoy horse riding at no extra cost to your policy. We think everyone should be able to enjoy themselves on holiday, which is why we will consider all medical conditions and proudly offer cover for the majority of pre-existing conditions. Just be sure to complete the quick online medical screening process for an accurate quote.
Is horse riding dangerous?
Like any sport, horse riding does pose some risks to those taking part, and the extent of these risks will vary depending on the type of horse riding, and skill level of the rider. Many of the risks involved can be minimised or even eliminated if you take the right precautions as a rider, and have the appropriate assistance if you are new to horse riding.
The most common injuries experienced by horse riders are injuries to the head and broken arms. Aside from wearing a well-fitted protective helmet when horse riding, there are a number of other precautions you can take as a rider to reduce the risks.
Behaviour: this encompasses the decisions you make while riding. In a similar manner to a motorist, you will need to use good judgement when riding on the road, taking into account the capabilities and character of your horse.
Equipment: making sure that the tack is in good condition and fastened properly, stirrups are at the appropriate length and that you're wearing all your personal safety equipment.
What are the benefits of horseback riding?
To those unfamiliar with the activity, horseback riding might not appear particularly taxing or physically challenging. However, there are a number of benefits to overall mental health and physical fitness to be had from horse riding.
Develops core strength - the key muscle that is strengthened by horse riding is the core, and having a strong core does much to improve overall physical strength and coordination. The strength required to maintain proper riding posture provides a good workout for the back and chest muscles.
Improves balance and coordination - To ride safely requires excellent balance and coordination. In addition to staying mounted, you'll also need to safely guide and direct the horse, coordinating your movements with those of the horse.
Stable strength - In addition to riding the horses themselves, there are a number of activities associated with horse riding that are also physically demanding and improve strength. The time spent mucking out stalls, lifting heavy tac and grooming horses does much to increase muscle tone and strength.
Exercises the mind - as you navigate obstacles and challenging terrain, you exercise and develop problem solving skills. Training to compete gives further opportunity to develop in this area.
Improves mental well-being - There are a number of proven psychological and therapeutic benefits in spending time with animals, one study showing that spending time with horses can raise the level of the mood-enhancing hormone serotonin, which contributes to happiness and a sense of well-being.
