Coronavirus and Travel Insurance for South Korea
The Coronavirus outbreak has resulted in 6284 confirmed cases in the Republic of Korea and the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO) is advising against all travel to the cities of Daegu, Cheongdo and Gyeongsan. They have been particularly affected and designated as 'special care zones' by the Government of South Korea. While the majority of existing cases are within these 'special care zones' the number of new cases across the rest of the country is rising, so visitors should take note of all official advice and comply with additional screening methods.
What Is Coronavirus?
Also known as COVID-19, the Coronavirus started in the city of Wuhan, China at the beginning of 2020. It presents with flu-like symptoms, including a fever and coughing and affects the respiratory system. For more information, the World Health Organisation (WHO) has detailed information about symptoms, preventative measures and up-to-date travel advice.
Will My Travel Insurance Be Affected by the Coronavirus?
If you have any questions about your travel insurance policy following the Coronavirus outbreak in South Korea, our regularly updated page regarding coronavirus travel insurance has detailed information about how your policy could be affected.
What does the FCDO advise?
As well as advising not to travel to the cities of Daegu, Cheongdo and Gyeongsan, the FCDO has issued these instructions for travellers:
- If you're already in the 'special care zones' of Daegu, Cheongdo or Gyeongsan, follow instructions from local authorities and ensure you comply with testing and screening protocols.
- Foreign nationals who have visited or transitted through Hubei province in China within the last 14 days are not allowed to enter South Korea.
Additionally, flights between South Korea and China and a number of other countries have been affected. Stay up to date with information and advice from your airline and travel agent.
