Coronavirus, Hong Kong and Travel Insurance

In response to the coronavirus outbreak, the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO) has issued travel advice for travellers to Hong Kong. There are currently 104 confirmed cases of COVID-19 in the region.

What is Coronavirus?

Originating in the city of Wuhan in China, the coronavirus, also known as COVID-19 is a respiratory condition which presents with flu-like symptoms, including fever, coughing and sneezing. The World Health Organisation (WHO) have a detailed page with information about the coronavirus, including up-to-date travel advice.

Hong Kong Travel Advice

The Hong Kong SAR Government has introduced measures to contain the coronavirus. As of 6th March, these are;

  • The suspension and scaling back of flights into Hong Kong from China - keep up-to-date with information from your airline and travel agent regarding your flights.
  • The closure of the border crossing between Hong Kong and mainland China.
  • Visitors of any nationality who have been to China within the last 2 weeks will be placed in mandatory 14-day quarantine upon arrival in Hong Kong.
  • Non-Hong Kong residents who have visited or transited through South Korea in the previous 14 days will be denied entry.
  • Any visitors who have been to Iran, or the Emilia-Romagna, Lombardy or Veneto regions of Italy in the past 14 days, will be required to stay in a Hong Kong quarantine centre.
  • Kai Tak Cruise and Ocean Terminals are closed to all passengers.
  • People arriving at or transiting through Hong Kong Airport will be subject to advanced screening measures.

Protecting Yourself Against Coronavirus

Although there is currently no cure for the coronavirus, there are a number of simple hygiene measures that you can take to reduce your risk of infection:

  • Wash your hands frequently and thoroughly with hot water and soap, for at least 20 seconds
  • Cover your mouth when coughing and sneezing
  • Use an alcohol-based hand gel throughout the day
  • Try to avoid close contact with anyone displaying symptoms
  • If you suspect that you or someone that you know has been in contact with the virus, or is showing symptoms, call NHS '111'
