Favourite hotels and cities revealed

The readers of a US magazine have revealed what they consider to be the best hotels and holiday cities in the world.

In a poll published in Travel + Leisure Magazine, people from the US ranked hotels and holiday destinations from around the world.

The top ranked hotel was the Oberoi Udaivilas in Udaipur, India. The hotel is relatively small, but voters praised its Spa facilities, service and restaurants.

The other two hotels to make the top three were the Singita Sabi Sand in South Africa and the Oriental in Bangkok.

A statement on the Travel + Leisure website noted: "Asian hotels have consistently received high marks, but this year, for the first time, an Indian property - Oberoi Udaivilas - has grabbed the number one spot.

"The Udaipur property also tops our lists for best small hotel and best hotel in Asia."

Elsewhere, the poll revealed that people from the US rate Florence as their favourite city, with Buenos Aires, Bangkok, Rome and Sydney also proving popular.

The publication noted: "T+L readers seek authentic experiences of place, whether it's art and architecture in favourite European destinations, like Florence … and Prague; urban classics in New York or Hong Kong; or exotic cities such as Fez, Udaipur, or Istanbul."
